Chennai: The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have faced significant challenges this IPL season, with their troubles rooted in the auction held months ago in Jeddah. The team's long-time head coach, Stephen Fleming, has acknowledged that their choices during the auction have led to a disastrous performance this year.
CSK's strategy of relying on seasoned players has backfired, leaving them at the bottom of the points table after losing seven out of nine matches. Fleming expressed his disappointment, stating, "It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what went wrong. We had high hopes based on our past performances, but we need to reassess our style of play and adapt to the evolving game."
After a recent loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, he initially defended the team's approach but later conceded that they may have overlooked some crucial aspects.
"Other franchises have improved, which is the essence of the auction. Unfortunately, we haven't managed to make the right selections. Responsibility lies with us, and we must demand more from our players," he remarked.
Fleming also noted that the auction process is unpredictable, comparing it to purchasing multiple properties, which can be mentally and physically draining. Despite the setbacks, he remains optimistic about the squad's potential.
Players like Rahul Tripathi and Deepak Hooda have underperformed, and CSK's hesitance to explore new talent early in the tournament has proven costly. However, younger players such as Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis are beginning to show promise for future seasons.
Fleming acknowledged the need for a thorough evaluation of their gameplay, admitting that injuries to captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the trial of 19 different players to find the right mix have contributed to their struggles.
As the team's strategist, Fleming takes full responsibility for the team's performance, stating, "Injuries and a lack of form have hindered our ability to execute a solid game plan. We've made too many changes in search of a solution that may not exist. The responsibility for this lies with me, without a doubt."
